Overall ranks will be 1-5, with 1 being Novice, 2 less than average, 3 average player, 4 better than average, and 5 being significantly better than average/superb player.  For all age level, an area next to each player is available to include any comments they believe will help the league understand this child’s strengths and weaknesses.  Older divisions will also have areas to include best position, number of goals, and overall team standings and comments. In order to promote consistency in the ranking criteria we ask coaches to look at the CURRENT players skill sets of the ENTIRE division, not just their team. For example, a “3″ average player on the 10-0 team, could be a “4″ or “5″ on the team that went 0-10!!! We ask that when ranking, look at this years current players ONLY and rank based on what they are seeing this year.

There are five sections to the ranking system:

  1. Coach Login
  2. Young Player Ranking
  3. Older Player Ranking
  4. Board Ranking Review
  5. Member Ranking of Coaches

The thing about ranking is that you have to come up with some number and you need more than just one opinion in getting it.  There needs to be some way of finitely comparing one player to another.  Each sport is unique in their needs.  In times past, some coaches have ranked with a scale of 1-3 with 1 excellent, 2 average, and 3 below average.  I  toyed around with the idea of having multiple categories of rank, such as Skill(1-5), Physical(1-5), and Attitude (1-3) and then coming up with a number.  It may be better, or it may not.  It’s hard to gauge because I’ve seen a child who is very physical with little skill do very well at the younger ages in soccer, but another child who is very physical but lacks skill get walked around in the older age brackets.  So far, our 1-5 ranking system has shown to make a positive impact on the balancing of teams.
